I got there and was amazed by the crowds...It was crazy madness but at the same time you are swept up in it and can't help to be a little awe struck!

Whannnn Waaaaaannnnnnn..... Winter Garden Lost the prize!

We I am sad to say that the winter garden did not do as well as I had hoped..... (although my expectations were pretty high from that summer crop) We did enjoy some Greens and Broccoli ...no lettuce or carrots or beets or brussel sprouts or cauliflower or celery but there is hope for some Fava beans and Leeks and maybe artichoke :-)

The summer has just been to hot here in LA and the garden gets more sun that we expected...so it just never got the chance to get going in all the heat (that most likely why summer did so well)

and I am not making excuses but the wind storms did knock out the power and that made issue with the water timer as well

We learned something though and isn't that the point ...right :-) Next year we try again with the knowledge that we now know

A Beautiful Story: Congratulations Julien !!!

Last Summer, while shooting an editorial at our friend Emmanuelle and Julien's apartment in Paris. I discovered some of Julien's drawing. I just loved them and they really showed his humour, talent and character as an amazing artist and graphic designer, So I photographed them for our story (Hoping that would be alright with him).
When they returned from vacation in the south of France, I confessed to what I had done. He laughed and explained that it was a project he was working on for fun but had not gotten together yet. He was happy that I liked them and was kind enough to offer some to me :-)
Well I will let him finish the story in his email he wrote:-)

"Hi guys!

Here is a beautiful story :
You remember my drawings this summer?
I was glad you liked it so I ve decided to send it to you.
When I brought it back to my agency to send it, my friend Xavier saw it and liked it.
So he decided to show it to Alex the owner of 0fr bookstore and Alex liked it!

Winter Garden

Look how its going , despite a broken watering timer, cabbage caterpillars and potential squirrel invasion, which I feel might turn into Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner a scenario...with me running to Acme every 5 min and getting the anvil dropped on my head:-)
Seed are coming up and Look at the pea's and Fava's I am so excited!!! Fingers crossed and lets see how it goes :-)

Clear Amend Plant

Well Thank goodness Conor could come by and help us get the winter garden in! We began by harvesting the last of the summer plants in the long box and clearing it. I felt so sad to pull the plants out , they still looked so hopeful but it was clear that we had planted these too late and there was not enough Sun and warmth to keep them going. We were not going to have the winter crop suffer the same consequences .

After clearing everything we amended the boxes with compost and fresh soil ( those summer plants took a lot out of the soil and we needed to get some nutrients back in) We made sure to mix it well and break up any clumps. Then with a beautiful map and plants from Nysha, at Ardenwood Edibles, we planned out where to plant and went to work

We have Brussel sprouts, cauliflower,mustard greens, shard,artichoke,spigarilla,leeks,beets,carrots and lots of other greens. I am so excited to see how we do

Tomatoes and Watermelon

Patrice and I ate this first at The Bazaar @ the SLS in Beverly Hills from a Favorite Chef that I photographed a while back, José Andrés. It may look or sound a bit odd but it is really such an elegant and refreshing bite.

Simply cut up an ice cold watermelon into cubes and add the hearts of the tomatoes (or seed part), this works great if you are making sauce because they always ask you to de-seed the tomato, then add a baby Basil leaf to the top....... The color is so beautiful and on a warm afternoon, I can't think of anything better :-)

More fun stuff made from the tomatoes and basil in the garden ...my watermelon was taken over by squash :-)

I have wanted to keep bee's for a while so I was surprised to find out Conor's friend Andrew, a local beekeeper,had a hive that needed a new home. I volunteered immediately!!! They came the other night and seem to be adjusting well to their new home :-)

Sustainable and Chic

Thank goodness for Nysha of Ardenwood edibles! She came by to check out the minifarmBoxes and help plant some late growing summer vegetables. Nysha has her business landscaping and sells organic non-genicically modified heirloom seeds for gardening. Her plants have really grown SO well at our house. She pointed out that the seeds are a healthier stock and normally you get more plants per seed pack and stronger better producing more nutritious plants as well. Our garden has really been a testament to that.

We had a great time planting. Nysha gave us some tips like when planting the cucumber and the squash that you should be very gentle with the roots ....don't break them up or disturb them too much. She also reminded us what Conor had pointed out about planting tomatoes. If you look you can see like little hairs on the stem, those are roots,if you remove the lower leafs of the plant it can allow you to plant the tomatoes deeper into the soil giving the plant more stability and a stronger root system :-)

Hopefully I will have a surprise coming :-)

Garden Growth

Some things have just exploded in the garden ... remember I got things in late and wasn't sure what might do well in the area or with my wind and strong sun . I am so excited to see what is happening and watch the daily growth. My friend beth came over the other day to help me manage some of the plants ... for example the tomatoes have gone insane (which I am really excited about) I learned from her that I can prune it back some by looking for the elbow joints and if you see a runner coming from the middle, clip it off ( not all but most) plant may be smaller and produce slightly fewer tomatoes she said but the ones it it does will taste better :-)

Ok sorry I'm a little late for this but its never too late to start a minifarmBox garden!!! We were lucky enough to have our friend and neighbor Conor of minifarmBox put in an official minifarmBox garden in at our house

Here is where we started:-(

here is the dry sandy soil we are dealing with on the hill which is a great reason for raised beds

ready to Plant :-) We purchased some amazing heirloom varieties from Ardenwood edibles nursery...LOVE them Organic and Non GMO plants

A healthy watering and I will let you know how it goes

Pickled Green Tomatoes:-)

Well time came to pull up our faithful 3 year old cherry tomato plant along with a 2 year or heirloom mystery tomato. While they have been great providers we needed to replant and give some new young varieties a chance. In taking them out they had plenty of green tomatoes on them and Patrice and I thought to try and pickle them (so not to waste out favorite plants) and thought that what a great send off, maybe in a summer martini :-)

I looked on line and found some recipes, we made a mix of what sounded logical and good .

So we did

one part vinegar

two parts water

half part salt

brought to a boil

and in a clean jar added

cleaned green tomato

bay leave

smashed garlic

dill

and peppercorns

Poured the boiling water into the jar (preheated to be carful it doesn't shatter) over the mixture and shut the lid :-)

Then we let it cool to room temp and now its in the fridge for 2 weeks

I will let you know how it turns out :-)

I know France is not that crazy and exotic as far as grocery shopping, but it is different.

One great thing is how easy to see where your food comes from. "local" here means buying products from France, that seems so Fabulous!...I didn't see any produce from America?.

I LOVE that this tops of the American Shelf !!!!

Its funny how foreign things seem even if just slightly different than you have always know... Makes me realize how much I rely on familiarity to make me feel safe in my purchase.

In the end I think I came home with some good purchases and a few new things to try :-)

Walking on the rue Saint-Honoré, I passed Astier de Villatte and saw the cutest dishes evah! They sell internationally and have retailers in the USA, so you maybe familiar, but this is the new design based on the French Flag!

It wasn't just a "Robot falling down a well", the energy and color and sound, Yelle was amazing.

the show began with DJ Madeon . He was really amazing.

Yelle came out in Full Safari Disco attire and began a high energy show. I think you'll see the lighting was amazing and Yelle was fun which really got the crowd going and kept the Energy climbing :-)

What a great way to spend New Years Day, Patrice and I tested vegan recipes for a friends new cookbook.

Not that I am interested in becoming vegan (sorry Cheese is just way too good) its always fun to try new things and we alway make that a part of our new years

First French Toast with a Cardamom Pear Compote

this seemed fun to me at first (no egg or milk) but I was surprised the texture and the taste were right on ! The Compote really gave the richness that didn't make you miss anything not even the the butter

then Home-made Hummus bi Tahini

Ok I thought Hummus ... don't you just buy that already made! I have to say it was well worth the effort to make from scratch! It tasted so fresh, plus there is something to be said for making it yourself and participating in the process

and last but not least Muhammara

This was an amazingly flavorful dip/spread! I had never had it but the taste of the peppers and the pomegranate molasses!!!! My new favorite thing! I spread it on grilled bread and topped with some baby arugula sprouts from the garden. It made a great lunch with a glass of Viognier! (hope thats vegan)

Thank goodness I was able to clean the bowl with some pita chips!!!

I know its almost Thanksgiving and everyone is thinking about the Harvest, but here in Southern California, It's time to get the winter vegetables and greens in the ground!

Our neighbor and friend Conor started this great business m inifarmbox.com. Well we thought we would try out one of his Rolling Patio Boxes on our deck to see what we can start harvesting this winter.

Conor also introduced us to his friend Nysha at Ardenwood Edibles. She is amazing and runs her own business landscaping and helping people grow organic gardens .

We came up with a plan of what we can grow and she did a map of how we should plant it.

It's great because the box rolls and its so nice to have it growing close to the kitchen... so we have easy acess:-) Henry likes it too

Hopefully we will have a good amount of greens this winter to supplement our diet :-)

Ye Olde Gentleman's Shave Day

Hanging out with Patrice and his cousin Bobby in NYC, Bobby asked if I had ever had a straight razor shave , like at a barber, To which I said no. Patrice was sweet enough to treat as they both agree to get me in on the experience. I was a little nervous at first but then realized what a relaxing luxury this is!!!! And what a close shave! I felt so dapper! Next Bobby promises to take me to a cigar bar to smoke a cigar and enjoy cognac...you know to round out the whole "Gentleman" experience.

My Barbar cringed when I said I had wanted the whole body shave;-)

I just received a copy of my Fall PBTeen cover ... Getting the shot was a hilarious site ... I was on the ground and the four models were throwing the quilt high above there heads and then back down on me.... over and over and over ! They were real sports and did such a great job

It did make for a new and dynamic cover:-)

I met Byron when I photographed his house crew in 2006 . Byron is a super amazing guy with incredible talent and drive.

Indian Summer Dinner

While Family was in town my aunt invited everyone up for dinner in Ojai. She made Indian food , which I never think to make but so perfect, and as always it was wonderful time and meal shared together!

Family Reunion

Mom and Dad came out for a visit and brought two of Shuger's puppies (incase you didn't know Shuger had 10 puppies in 2003) My parents have Taffy and Bailey. Surprisingly they all were so happy to be reunited and I thought how wonderful that they get to see each other every once in a while... well good for me too. They mean so much too me and are so wonderful (except for the farting) !

Imagine my surprise and excitement to receive a call from the Country Home team about reviving the magazine. They wanted to runs some test issues to see what the newsstand response would be and if there was a chance to revive the magazine. Well, I saw the first one on the newsstand the other day and it looks beautiful...... all they need now is for EVERYONE to go out and buy a dozen or so copies to prove they still have an audience:-)
